From Ancient Greek -γενής (-genḗs, “producer of”). Possibly influenced by Irish gin (“(to give) birth, source”) from Old Irish gainithir, from Proto-Celtic *ganyetor. Both ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵenh₁-.
