-klas
Lithuanian
Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *-tlo. Compare Latvian -kls, -kla, Old Prussian -clo, Proto-Slavic *-dlo. From *-tlom, -dʰlom (agentive suffix). The Balto-Slavic reconstruction of -tl- is preferable to -dl-, whereby the unusual consonant cluster would have undergone assimilation in Slavic and dissimilation in Baltic. Compare the related Proto-Slavic *-teljь.
Suffix
-klas m (plural -klai, feminine -klė)
- an old agentive suffix, normally applied to unsuffixed verbs
- dùrti (“stab”) → dùrklas (“dagger”)
- pjáuti (“reap, cut”) → pjū́klas (“saw”)
