From Proto-Germanic *-līkaz (“having the body or form of”), from *līką (“body”) (whence English lich). Cognate with Old Saxon -līk (Middle Low German -lik), (Dutch -lijk, Afrikaans -lik, Old High German -līh (German -lich), Old Norse -ligr (Swedish -lig), Gothic -𐌻𐌴𐌹𐌺𐍃 (-leiks).
