From Middle High German armbrust, from Medieval Latin arbalista, from Late Latin arcuballista, from Latin arcus (“bow”) + ballista (“ancient military engine for hurling missiles”) (compare English arbalest); modified by folk etymology to appear to be Arm (“arm”) + Brust (“breast”).
