Etymology

From Hebrew אַשְׁכְּנַז ('ashk'naz). Biblical Ashkenaz was the son of Gomer, grandson of Japheth, and great-grandson of Noah. Ashkenaz's descendants were identified with Germans by medieval Jewish tradition.
