Etymology

Unclear. From Gothic or Gepidic 𐌰𐍄𐍄𐌰 (atta, father) + -𐌹𐌻𐌰 (-ila), "little father". Related to Old English Ætla and Old Norse Atli. Possibly Gothicized Turkic *es (great, old), and *t il (sea, ocean), attíl- (< *etsíl < *es tíl) with the meaning "the oceanic, universal ruler". Also Turkic āt (name, fame), and atli (horseman, cavalier).
