Etymology
From Middle High German ougapfel, from Old High German ougapful, augaphul, from Proto-Germanic *augaaplaz, equivalent to Auge (“eye”) + Apfel (“apple”). Cognate with Old English ēagæppel (“apple of the eye; pupil”).
