From earlier Bahia de Todos os Santos (“Bay of All Saints”), after a bay on its coast. Bahia is an obsolete spelling of baía (“bay”); the name of the state was specially mentioned as an example of the exception for traditional placenames in the spelling reform that proscribed <h> between vowels.
