From Thai บ้าน (bâan) or Lao ບ້ານ (bān, “village”) + Thai แม่ (mɛ̂ɛ) or Lao ແມ່ (mǣ, “mother”) + Rade Thuôt (from Y Thuôt, a Rade personal name; rendered in Thai as ถ็วต ()), literally "Thuôt's mother's village". Compare Buôn Ma Thuột (literally “Thuôt's father's village”)
