Etymology

Possibly ultimately from a Turkic word barasu, meaning "white water" with a Slavic suffix -ov, or from an Old Slavic name Brasa; compare the Hungarian name for the city, Brassó, from the same source. The city was known as Kronstadt ("Crown City") in the local Transylvanian Saxon (German) language, and Corona (crown) in Medieval Latin.
