Demut

German

Etymology

From Middle High German diemuot, diemüete, from Old High German thiomuotī (ca. 800). The modern vowel -e- may be due partly to raising before a nasal consonant, partly to influence by Middle Low German dēmōt, itself probably a borrowing from Middle High German (the older northern word being Old Saxon ōthmōdī). Compare Dutch deemoed (likewise from High or Low German).
