From Middle High German droschel, from Old High German drōscala, from Proto-Germanic *þrustalǭ, possibly altered from or a diminutive of *þurstaz. The modern consonantism is Central and Low German (compare Middle Low German drōsle, from Old Saxon thrōsla). Compare English throstle.
