From Middle High German egel(e), from Old High German egala (8th c.), from Proto-Germanic *egalaz, diminutive of Proto-Indo-European *h₂egʷʰ- (“snake”) (compare Welsh euod (“sheepworm”), Ancient Greek ἔχις (ékhis) ~ ὄφις (óphis), Armenian իժ (iž)). Cognate to Dutch echel (“leech”).
