From Middle High German īwe, from Old High German īwa, from Proto-Germanic *īwō, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₁eiH-u̯eh₂. Cognate with dated Dutch ijf, English yew (the latter from a masculine stem Proto-Germanic *īwaz).
