From earlier Gemse, from Middle High German gemeze, from Old High German gamiza (13th c.), from Late Latin camōx (5th c.), from Gaulish camox, probably from an extinct Alpine language (Raetic, Ancient Ligurian), possibly Proto-Indo-European *kem (“without horns”).
