Etymology
From Middle High German hulfe, Central German form contrasting with Upper German hilfe (whence contemporary Hilfe). Cognate to Dutch hulp (“help”). The forms Hilfe and Hülfe were used in free variation in modern German. Only in the early 20th century did Hülfe come out of use.
