Etymology
Via early modern Dutch haai from Middle Dutch haey. The word is probably borrowed directly from Old Norse hár, há-, whence unattested Middle Dutch *ha, whose inflected forms would have regularly developed into haai-. Borrowing from Icelandic, considered in the older literature, is not endorsed by contemporary Dutch etymologic sources.
