Hebamme
German
Etymology
Originally *Hebanne from Old High German hevanna (“midwife”), later contorted to Hebamme to resemble Amme (“wet nurse”). This development is still reflected in modern German, inasmuch as the word can either be pronounced as a compound ("Heb-Amme") or as one word ("Hebamme").
