From Heidëchs + -li (“diminutive suffix”). Heidëchs from Middle High German eidëhse, from Old High German egidehsa, from Proto-Germanic *agiþahsijǭ, from *agiz (“lizard, snake”) + *þahsuz (“badger”). Cognate with German Eidechse, German Low German Eevtaske, Dutch hagedis, English ask (“eft, newt”).
