Etymology

From Hindi हैदराबाद (haidrābād) / Urdu حیدرآباد‎, from हैदर (haidar) / حیدر‎ (haidar, “lion”) + -आबाद (-ābād) / آباد‎ (“-ābād”, placename suffix). Named in honour of the Caliph Ali Ibn Abi Talib, nicknamed "Haidar" for his lion-like valour in battles.[1]
