From the group's former Arabic-language name, الدَّوْلَة الْإِسْلَامِيَّة فِي الْعِرَاق (ad-dawla al-ʾislāmiyya fī l-ʿirāq, literally “the Islamic State in Iraq”).
Usage notes
This name was used after it was disaffiliated from al-Qaeda and before it acquired territory in Syria.
