From Middle High German kanne, Old High German channa, from Proto-Germanic *kannǭ. Cognate with Old Norse kanna, Old English canne, English can, French canette (“small can”), Gothic *𐌺𐌰𐌽𐌽𐍉 (*kannō).[1]
