From Middle High German krām (“merchant tent; wares”), from Old High German krām (“merchant tent; tent cloth”). The semantic development is “tent cloth” → “merchant tent” → “shop” → “wares” → “stuff”. Cognate with Dutch kraam (“booth, stall”). More at crame.
