Limburgish

1. A Germanic language or dialect continuum spoken near the common border between the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

• In the Netherlands, Limburgish has been recognised as a minority language. However, this has been criticised by linguists because the group fulfils none of the criteria usually applied by linguists to define a language. It is merely the most distinct and most vivid of Dutch dialects. The status includes all dialects spoken in the province of Limburg, even ones that, linguistically, are not Limburgish at all.
• The south-eastern borders of Limburgish are fairly well defined by the limits of the High German consonant shift (maken-machen line). The north-western borders, however, are variously defined by different isoglosses (ik-ich line; tonality; [oː] for Germanic *ō; [uː] for *ū; High German-like split of *au; and others).
