German

Etymology

From Middle Low German linnen.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈlɪnən/, [ˈlɪnən], [ˈlɪnn̩]

Noun

Linnen n (genitive Linnens, plural Linnen)

  1. (literary) linen

Usage notes

  • ‟Linen” as a fabric is usually called Leinen in German. A Linnen is a ‟cloth of linen”, particularly in the plural where Leinen is undistinguishable from the plural of Leine (line). Linnen is a literary term, however. A more general word would be Leinentuch (pl. -tücher).
