From local Late Latin villa Merilani, from an improper genitive form of Merila,[1] from a Suevic and Gothic personal name (Gothic 𐌼𐌴𐍂𐌹𐌻𐌰 (mērila)), from Proto-Germanic *Mērilô,[2] from *mēraz (“great; famous”) and the diminutive personal suffix *-ilan-.[3]
