Etymology
Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 南 (“south”; SV: nam), perhaps based on the Quảng Nam accent. Like nam/Nam, Nôm has been used to refer to Vietnam as opposed to Bắc (“North”) which is China.
