Sino-Vietnamese word from 南斯, contracted from Mandarin 南斯拉夫 (Nán Sīlāfū, Nam Tư Lạp Phu, literally “Southern Slav”). Compare Serbo-Croatian Jugòslāvija (literally “land of the Southern Slavs”).
