From Proto-Germanic *uhnaz (compare Dutch oven, Low German Aven, German Low German Aven, Awen, Owen, West Frisian ûne, English oven, Danish ovn, Swedish ugn, Icelandic ofn, Gothic auhns), probably from a Proto-Indo-European *aukw- (“cooking pot”), *Hukʷ-, *ukwnos (compare Sanskrit उखा (ukhā), Old Armenian ակութ (akutʿ), Albanian anë, Latin aulla, olla, Ancient Greek ἰπνός (ipnós)).
