Borrowed from German Low German Pütt, from Middle Low German pütte, from Old Saxon putti, from Proto-Germanic *putjaz (“pit; well”), from Latin puteus (“pit; well”). Originally the same word as Pfütze (“puddle”); see there for cognates.
