From Middle High German pfluoc, from Old High German pfluog, phluog, from Proto-Germanic *plōgaz, *plōguz (“plough”). Cognate with Low German Ploog, Dutch ploeg, English plough, Scots pleuch, plou, West Frisian ploech, North Frisian plog, Danish plov, Swedish plog, Icelandic plógur.
