Etymology

First attested in 1555; from French Pyrénées, from Latin Pȳrēnaeī montēs, from Ancient Greek Πῡρήνη (Pūrḗnē) (“Pyrene”, literally “fruit-stone”), daughter of Bebryx and beloved of Herakles, and who, legend has it, is buried in the range.[1]
