Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *h1(o/e)pi (“on, upon”). Cognate to Ancient Greek ὄπιθε (ópithe, “behind”), ὄπιθεν (ópithen, “behind”) (Alternative form of ὄπισθεν (ópisthen, “behind, backwards, in the future”)).[1]
