From Proto-Indo-European *h₁eh₂n- (ring). Cognate with Latin ānus (ring, anus) and Old Armenian անուր (anur, ring, necklace). Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *yeh₃s- (belt, girdle); compare Ancient Greek ζώνη (zṓnē), Old Church Slavonic (по)ꙗсъ ((po)jasŭ), Lithuanian júosta.
