Proto-Celtic
Etymology
Either from *bā-rigos (cow-tying) as theorized by Hamp, or from a PIE compound *bʰeh₂-h₃reǵos (light-extending) as theorized by Matasovic who rejects Hamp's theory as semantically far-fetched. If the latter theory is correct, then *bāregos was originally an adjective that referred to dawn.
