From earlier *šauki, borrowed from early Proto-Slavic *ščaukā (from which late Proto-Slavic *ščuka).
Inflection
The descendants disagree on the inflection. Estonian, Votic, Ludian and partly Veps have an i-stem paradigm, the remaining ones an e-stem.
