Unknown. Has been compared with various words in other Uralic languages with mainly heat-related meanings (e.g. Udmurt ӝог (džog, hot, drought), Northern Mansi саӈк (saňk, sweat)), and UEW reconstructs a common root *čeŋke, but this remains uncertain.
