Etymology

From Proto-Uralic *kälew. Cognates include Proto-Samic *kālōjeannē, Moksha кел (kel), Komi кел (kel, sister-in-law). Possibly ultimately an ancient Wanderwört; compare e.g. Ancient Greek γάλως (gálōs, sister-in-law), Turkish gelin (daughter-in-law).
