Proto-Finnic

Etymology

Borrowing from an Indo-European language, possibly Baltic. The vowel *e is irregular, but a similar substitution is attested in certain other loanwords of Baltic origin, e.g. *reki. A closer resemblance is common West Germanic *meri (from Proto-Germanic *mari), but no other specifically West Germanic early loanwords in the Finnic languages are known. In any case, the word derives ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *móri (sea) in some way or another.
