Etymology

From a root *repä + *-oi, from Proto-Finno-Permic *repäs. Cognates include Erzya ривезь (rivezʹ), Eastern Mari рывыж (ryvyž), Komi-Permyak руч (ruč) and Udmurt ӟичы (dźićy). All from early Indo-Iranian (Sanskrit लोपि (lopi), Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬞𐬌 (raopi)).
