Likely from Pre-Germanic *terh₂(h₃)kʷ-, a compound of Proto-Indo-European *terh₂- (“to cross”) + *h₃ekʷ- (“to see”). For the latter component, compare Sanskrit नीच (nīca, “below, down”) (< *nih₃kʷeh₁).[1]
