Long-grade verbal adjective derived from *beraną (to bear). Similar in form to Sanskrit भार्य (bhārya, to be borne, supported), but probably closer diachronically to बभ्रि (babhri, bearing, carrying). Compare also Latin -fer (bearing, bringing forth).
