From Proto-Indo-European *pnkt-, from *pen-k-, from *pen- (“moist, wet; swamp”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *fangō (“wetness, moisture”) (compare Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌽𐌲𐌰 (fanga, “mud, addle, mire”), Italian fango (“mud”).
