From Proto-Indo-European *gʰegʰuǵʰeh₂ (“cuckoo”), which Gąsiorowski makes a reduplicated noun based on *gʰeuǵʰ- (“to hide”), of the type of *kʷékʷlos. Cognate with Latvian dzeguze (“cuckoo”).
