Proto-Germanic
Etymology
The name is likely derived from the Proto-Germanic word *geutaną, meaning "to pour".
It possible that the name originated as a heiti for "men (of the tribe)", with the literal meaning "they who pour their seed". Another possibility is that they were named after the Göta Älv (The River Geat) near which they lived, and it was instead the river that carried the name "the pouring one". (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
