From Proto-Indo-European *ḱok-h₂-[1]. Cognate with Sanskrit शाखा (śākhā, “branch”), Russian соха́ (soxá, “wooden plough”), Armenian ցախ (cʿax, “branch”), Lithuanian šakà (“branch”), Old Irish géc (“branch”) and Persian شاخ (šâx, “branch”).
