From earlier *hauppaz, from Proto-Indo-European *kouHp-nó-. Alternatively, it may continue *keHup- from an ablaut paradigm with *hūpô. Related to Proto-Slavic *kupъ (“heap”), Lithuanian kaūpas (“heap”).
