From *mōdrijaz (“of a mother, maternal”, adj), and/or *méh₂treh₂ (“mother's sister”), from Proto-Indo-European *méh₂tēr.
Cognate with Cornish modrep (“maternal aunt”), Welsh modryb (“maternal aunt”), Ancient Greek μήτριος (mḗtrios, “motherly, maternal”), Albanian motër (“sister”).
