From Proto-Indo-European *méh₂-méh₂-, reduplication of Proto-Indo-European base *méh₂- (“mama, mother”). Cognate with Latin mamma (“mother, mama, nurse”), Lithuanian mãma, momà (“mother”), Lettish mãma (“mother”), Old Irish muimme (“foster mother”), Irish mam (“mother”).
