From Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱerd-, *(s)ḱer- (“dung, manure, filth”). Cognate with Latin cerda ("dung, feces"; in compounds: mūscerda, sūcerda, etc.), Ancient Greek σκῶρ (skôr, “excrememnt, feces”).
